Applying my apprenticeship assignments on audit evidence directly contributed to our academy achieving 'Platinum' safeguarding status.

Expanding expertise
I joined the programme because I want to better understand the broader scope of safeguarding and the specific statutory responsibilities of a Deputy Designated Safeguarding Lead (DDSL).
Given our unique location on the Isle of Wight, I am particularly eager to engage with diverse case studies that may fall outside our local experience.
Additionally, I look forward to mastering the legislation frameworks, the intricacies of safeguarding audits, and the rigorous expectations set by Ofsted.
One of the most impactful tasks so far was conducting a Serious Case Review via the NSPCC. This exercise taught me the vital importance of 'looking beyond' the immediate presentation of a case and highlighted the necessity of multi-agency partnership working.
It also broadened my perspective on safeguarding challenges faced nationally; engaging with mainland case studies has prepared me for a wider variety of complex scenarios that may occur less frequently in our specific location.
Although I have only completed three modules, I am already gaining confidence in applying these skills to my daily practice
The apprenticeship has integrated seamlessly into my role as Safeguarding Officer. Rather than being a separate task, it enhances my daily practice. I’m currently working on the principles and purposes of inspections, reviews, and audits. I am able to directly apply that real-world experience to my academic work. This ensures that our high standards are not just maintained, but constantly advanced.
The support has been exceptional from the outset. At the start of the apprenticeship, I attended a comprehensive induction that outlined the roadmap, including how to effectively manage my off-the-job training hours.

My trainer spent two years supporting me in every single way possible, and I am so grateful for her. She never once doubted my abilities to reach my goals, and supported me throughout.

Most people think that apprenticeships are just for younger people and those new to job roles, but that just isn’t true. The environment is really supportive, and I can get through to the apprenticeships team and my tutors by email, phone, or face-to-face.

The apprenticeship provides a structured pathway for learning, combining on-the-job training with formal education. This approach ensures you get the right mix of theoretical knowledge and practical experience, which is ideal for anyone starting their career in IT.
