Montgomery Primary welcomes Sir Lenny Henry and Newsround for BBC's 500 Words Competition Launch

Montgomery Primary Academy in Birmingham had a special day today as it welcomed Sir Lenny Henry and the team from Newsround to kick off the BBC's 500 Words competition.

The beloved comedian, actor, and writer was met with excitement from both students and staff, bringing laughter to the school as he enjoyed jokes shared by the talented pupils.

The 500 Words competition, launched in partnership with the BBC and the National Literacy Trust, encourages children to embrace creativity and storytelling. It's a nationwide challenge that motivates young minds to put their imagination into words. Montgomery Primary was chosen as the perfect place to kick off this initiative, with students ready to showcase their storytelling talents.

Head of School, Fozia Nisar., shared her joy about the event, saying: “Who else can have this much fun at work? Just another day at our school!” The day was not just a hit with the students; teachers were thrilled to see the enthusiasm and joy brought to the classroom.

Sir Lenny Henry, born in Dudley, not far from Birmingham, is a well-known figure in British entertainment. He has strong connections to the Midlands, often supporting events in and around Birmingham.

Children and staff alike were thrilled by his presence at Montgomery Primary, ending the week on a high.
