VE Day celebrations across the Lift Schools network
May 13, 2025
Reading time:

This year, primary schools across the Lift Schools network came together to commemorate the 80th anniversary of VE Day, a day that marks the end of the Second World War in Europe and honours the courage and resilience of a generation.

In the lead-up to the occasion, as well as on the day itself, all schools within the trust dedicated time to learning about and celebrating this historic event.

With the exception of Year 6, due to the proximity of SATs, all year groups were encouraged to participate in these activities.

Key Stage 2 pupils primarily took part in written tasks, such as reflective writing and historical reports, to deepen their understanding of the significance of VE Day.

Meanwhile, Key Stage 1 pupils took part in drama-based activities, allowing them to explore the event through role-play and storytelling.

It is part of Lift Schools’ mission to ensure that every child, regardless of background, geography, or ability, receives the best possible education and is given opportunities to learn about important historical events.

By learning about VE Day, pupils not only develop historical awareness but also gain a deeper appreciation of the values of resilience, sacrifice, and unity—qualities that will support them in school and beyond.

We’ve put together a short video which highlights the creative and educational ways our schools marked this historic day. You can watch the video in full here.

Here's a glimpse of the exciting VE Day activities that happened in our classrooms:

  • Anglesey Primary Academy: Celebrated with a VE Day-themed school dinner menu, using their writing skills to craft victory speeches
  • Brockworth Primary Academy: Designed their own war medals
  • Lea Forest Primary Academy: Made hand print poppies, created Churchill silhouettes and filled them in with images of victory. Year 6 designed and wrote their own historical newspaper reports about VE Day.
  • North Ormesby Primary Academy: Hand painted the Union Jack flag, created pictures to celebrate VE Day inspired by 20th-century artist L. S. Lowry, while Year 3 created their own Horrible History music video and Year 4 made and performed victory speeches in the character of Winston Churchill
  • Shafton Primary Academy: Early Years celebrated with a VE Day picnic, Year 1 designed bunting in red, white and blue, while Year 5 wrote diary entries in character from the time period, getting into the mindset of people at the time celebrating the victory
  • Beacon Academy: Children created celebratory posters and wrote postcards to family members from the perspective of someone in World War 2
  • Caldicotes Primary Academy: Children created visual art about what it was like to live through the Blitz
  • Feversham Primary Academy: Children made postcards from people living through VE Day, and posters celebrating victory
  • Hazelwood Academy: Classes designed and created their own commemorative medals
  • Hall Road Academy: Children practised for a bombing raid
  • Percy Shurmer Academy: Classes presented a TV history documentary on events leading to VE Day
  • Plumberow Primary Academy: Gathered together for a spectacular VE Day themed aerial shot

Thanks to our schools for sharing all the exciting things they have been up to to commemorate such a significant day in our history.
